Manifesto

SoiWat aspires to help the European public to overcome their preconceptions about Bangkok and to change the image of this city to one more realistic, acknowledging its genuine modernity and its amazing creativity. We intend to allow Thai designers to share their visions and creations with Europe. Our organisation is meant to create a platform allowing the East to enrich our conceptions by demonstrating its artistic skills. A place where East meets West.

Fashion is perceived as more dynamic in cities like Paris, London, Milan, Hong Kong, Antwerp… however, amazed by what is happening in Bangkok, we have come to the conclusion that it should be part of that list. It’s a hive of designers having a unique energy; like the others it has something to say, something to offer we should all learn from. Simply because the message goes far beyond the usual "look smart, wear my clothes"...

Bangkok is a very different contemporary creation center, which has the potential to rank as high as the other fashion hubs. Undoubtedly it will very soon be regarded as such. Asia taught the West a lot in the past and there is still a lot to learn. Nobody truly expects the West to dictate what to do and what to wear. It is now time for multipolarity in design as well: America and Europe do not have the monopoly on defining aesthetics.

Among Bangkok's noteworthy potentials is the unique freedom of expression designers can enjoy there, where independent designers do not necessarily have to work for large fashion houses that could tame their creativity. Bangkok, where so much is tailor made, is a unique place for fashion designers. Nonetheless these young designers need support to give their work a chance to reach a wider public and subsequently be given the means to pursue their path of creativity. This is SoiWat's primary objective.

As a secondary objective we intend by all necessary means to ease partnerships between Thai and European fashion design schools, and help Thai students attend design schools in Europe. Europe could also benefit from the experience and expertise of Thai professionals.

In order to give Bangkok designers a chance to share their views about modernity, we want to show and make their work available to Europe. Our aim is to provide an insight to Bangkok's contemporary creation scene. Building a new bridge between Europe and the East will allow Europeans to genuinely appreciate these creations, and will allow the people from which they originate to develop and continue creating.
