"Southern hemisphere countries have long provided an inspiration for some of our well-known designers. These countries have fostered great dressmakers and fashion design schools. However, local designers need distribution outlets so they can reach the consumer market and prove that ethical fashion (also called Fashion for development, whereby designers work with local craftsmen) can be fully in line with current economic imperatives.
In the north, European designers are steering fashion away from its cliché, "hippie" image, and are giving it a new edge, which will contribute to grow the trend. On the 'other side' a growing number of major economic players (retailers, purchasing offices, distribution outlets, department stores buyers, as well as established designers) are starting to follow this new trend. They, too, want to sell products that are ethical and environmentally friendly."
